Research

His research interests are safety assessment of heritage structures, surveying techniques and ancient construction techniques. He has a particular interest for Gothic vaults and other objects where geometrical, technical and structural aspects are intimately related. In his Ph.D. dissertation [pdf], and later works he studied the influence of the release of the classical plasticity theory hypotheses on the stability of vaulted structures.

His most recent research concerns the dynamic behaviour of block structures and arches, the ethics of structural interventions in archaeological sites and the constructional aspects of adobe vernacular architecture in Taiwan.

  • Project aiming to develop software tools facilitating total station measurements through (1) real-time control of the measurements, (2) parametric modelling of architectural elements and (3) use of digital photographs.
    Source code available at sourceforge
  • Documentation of vernacular architecture. Project of documentation of the village of Lai-Hui, in the province of Yun-Lin (in collaboration with Chen I-Chun). Documentation of traditional houses in the area of Dou-Liu (in the framework of classes of architectural documentation).
  • Analysis of masonry arches. Improvment of Calipous, a computer software for the structural analysis of masonry arches and is still very interested by the construction techniques of gothic vaults. Research project aiming at creating a flexible command-driven platform allowing the construction of 3D block structures of complex geometry and to study them using limit analysis.
  • Participation to a UNESCO - DGA (Directorate General of Antiquities) project in Baalbek (Lebanon) "Capacity building of human resources for digital documentation of world heritage sites affected by 2006 war in Lebanon". In collaboration with M.Santana (coordinator), T.Patricio, B.Van Genechten, K.Van Balen.
